The 8Ball Computer Program began in 2005, when a group of students started refurbishing computers collected from the verge. The program was given a home by the Murdoch University Guild of Students, and since then it has grown into the award winning program it is today.
With a dedicated team of volunteers, both students and local community members, the 8Ball Program refurbishes thousands of computers each year. So far this year, we have provided computers to Murdoch students, local community members, and over 200 have been sent to primary schools in Uganda. We are now working hard to send 200 computers to Uruguay through the International Red Cross.
We are always looking for donations of computers, but due to the software we use, there are certain restrictions on the equipment we can accept. If we can't accept your equipment, but you don't want to it to end up in landfill, you can try some of the other recyclers in Perth.
The 8Ball Program was created by Gerry Georgatos when he realised that many students were struggling through university without access to a computer at home. Almost all assignments are required to be typed, which means spending hours in the computer labs at uni if you don't have your own. But, you don't have to be a student to apply for a computer.
We are always seeking more volunteers for the 8Ball Program. If you can spare a couple of hours each week, we'd love to hear from you. There are many benefits to helping out with 8Ball, including meeting others who share your interest in computers, and improving your hardware skills.
